With genuine AC and Shelby Cobra prices well out of reach of mere mortals, the kit car and replica manufacturing industry began producing replica Cobras, with Gravetti being among the best that the market has to offer.
With its all American Ford V8 engine in the front, snarling soundtrack and exposed driving position, the Cobra represented the dream of sports and racing car during the 1960s, and enjoyed an illustrious motorsport career in the hands of both privateer teams as the Shelby factory teams.
The lines of a Cobra are instantly recognisable, and the bodywork of this particular example is excellent throughout.
This so nice Cobra is a 1990 registered replica, and we have to say it looks a great sports car. It has travelled only 14000 miles and is just out of long-term ownership and storage.
Finished in one of the best colour combinations, its red paintwork is in a perfect condition throughout and the car truly shines.
We can see no sign of any dents or impact damage, nor any untoward panel gaps or other issues with the shell.
An early factory built car, this example is of a considerably higher quality than most of the later home built cars, with tighter shut lines and a better overall level of fit and finish.
Importantly, under the bonnet sits the right engine, a monstrous 5.8 litres Ford V8 and opening up the bonnet, the sight of this V8 is enough to stir the soul of any driver.
The engine itself is in excellent condition and the transmission operates as it should.
During our test drive, the car fired into life and settled into a typically lumpy big displacement V8 idle.
This particular Cobra may not sport the iconic side exit exhaust, but a custom made side exhaust system which sounds great.
If the buyer wishes, a normal exhaust with two outlets at the back of the car can be built for a small extra charge.
